Transmedia Storytelling
Massey University, Wellington
This course explored the possibilities of transmedia, or cross-platform storytelling in a variety of genres from advertising and marketing, entertainment, indie media or documentary to interactive web experiences, social media or social change campaigns. The course provided an introduction to different approaches to the elements, structures and techniques of storytelling, with reference to a wide range of historical genres and media context, and considerations of different forms, including non-linear and transmedia narratives.
While we looked at projects that employ transmedia strategies across the spectrum, the students defined, designed and wrote their own transmedia narratives in consideration of the many possibilities the form offers. They worked individually or in small groups, on a project of their own selection, fiction or non-fiction, using up to three platforms of their choice. By the end of the term, they created a basic story framework and characters, a design, and user experience that used the core concepts of transmedia storytelling.
